What is Jackson-Pratt Drain?
A Jackson-Pratt (JP) drain is a surgical drain device used to remove fluids that accumulate in the body after surgery. It consists of a plastic bulb or
reservoir connected to a flexible tube. The tube is inserted into the surgical site to collect and remove excess fluid, reducing the risk of infection
and promoting proper healing.
Care of the Jackson-Pratt Drain:
When you leave the hospital, care for your Jackson-Pratt drain by:
Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling the drain.
Empty the Drain Regularly: Empty the drain when it's half full or per your healthcare provider's instructions to maintain proper functioning.
Secure the Drain: Use the prescribed method (e.g., safety pin, clip) to securely attach the drain to your clothing or body, preventing accidental
dislodgment.
Observe for Signs of Infection: Keep an eye on the drain site for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or increased pain. Contact your
healthcare provider if you notice any concerning changes.
Stripping the Drain Tubing (Daily):
Stripping refers to the process of removing any clots or obstructions from the tubing to maintain proper drainage. Follow these steps:
- Begin by straightening any bends in the tube.
- Grasp the tube near your body, positioning one hand beneath the suture
site. - With one hand, firmly pinch the tube below the point where the other hand is holding it.
- Ensure the drain remains dry, and avoid any attempts to reposition its
internal component, as this may lead to potential leaks or blockages. - Glide your pinched fingers downward along the tube towards the bulb,
located away from your body. - This motion will effectively transfer the fluid into the bulb. Note that the
bulb may flatten during this process, which is a normal occurrence. - Strip the drain every two hours while awake and ensure it doesn't snag
during sleep. Record the output every 12 hours.
Emptying and Recording Fluid Collected (Every 12 Hours):
Wash Your Hands: Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the drain.
Gather Supplies: Prepare a clean container for the drained fluid, a measuring cup if needed, and a record sheet.
Empty the Drain:
- Follow the healthcare provider's instructions to detach the drain bulb.
- Hold the bulb below the drain site for gravity drainage.
- Remove the plug, and empty the fluid into the container.
Measure and Record:
- Use a measuring cup if needed to measure the drained fluid.
- Record date, time, and amount on the provided sheet.
Clean and Secure:
- Wipe the drain plug with a clean cloth.
- Reattach the drain bulb securely to your clothing or body.
